Lake Balaton is indeed big. About 177km (110 miles) long and with a cycle path network around it more than 200km (124 miles) long. The total surface area is greater than 600km2. (148,000 acres) In terms of American Lakes it is dwarfed by the Great Lakes of course, but is respectably larger than Lake Champlain, (smaller than Lake Pontchartrain). Interestingly enough it is very shallow - only 12m (39 feet) deep at the deepest depths, so it is great for small children.
