Joachim Peiper was a field officer in the Waffen-SS during World War II  personal adjutant to Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler between November 1940  August 1941. By 1945, he was an SS-Standartenführer  the Waffen-SS’s youngest regimental colonel. He was convicted of war crimes committed in Belgium  accused of war crimes in Italy. This German woman and her baby are two survivors of the 1945 Łodz death march which involved all ethnic Germans who lived in that Polish city. Their expulsion in the middle of winter caused many of them to die from exposure. The two in the photo are among the ten who survived, and reached Berlin, out of a group of 150. Doctors cut her thigh muscles and cut into her shin bone, crippling and almost killing her. Despite this, she was forced on a death march with other inmates beginning April 28, 1945. He was arrested, tried by the Supreme National Tribunal at the Auschwitz Trial of 1947 in Kraków, and sentenced to death for crimes against humanity. He was executed by hanging on January 28, 1948.
