Trakr found one of the last survivors of the attacks AP Images/Stephen Chernin Trakr was a police dog for six years in Halifax, Nova S.

Trakr and his handler were among the first search and rescue teams at Ground Zero. Rescue dogs who worked the site have been checked for illnesses just like the humans. No illnesses have been found in the rescue animals.

The AKC Canine Health Foundation has recently awarded an ACORN grant to the WDC to fund the completion of the 9/11 Medical Surveillance Study. As part of the announcement, they did a wonderful article on the last three dogs in our study: Texas Task Force 1's Bretagne, Morgan & Tookie. #TEEX #SearchDogs

The lesser known of New York's canine heroes, comfort dogs, such as this golden retriever, help soothe those affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Similar to search-and-rescue dogs, comfort dogs travel to disaster scenes to aid relief efforts. Studies show that people experience physiological changes—such as a drop in heart rate and blood pressure—when they pet animals.
