He walked across hot steel beams as fires raged in pits hundreds of feet below, crawled through narrow tunnels of unstable debris, breathed dense smoke and debris-filled air and braved treacherous footing - never once showing fear. Trakr probably found the last survivor buried beneath the rubble 9 meters underneath the surface after 9/11, in addition to locating numerous victims. "In the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Trakr simply forged ahead because of his remarkable valor and ability to sense the desperation around him." At last, Trakr collapsed from chemical and smoke inhalation, burns, and exhaustion. Appollo was a fearless German Shepherd, part of the NYPD, and one of the first dogs to learn search and rescue. On the morning of the September 11, 2001, Appollo was a first responder at the World Trade Center. He searched through burnt debris, ignoring charred paws, cuts, and other obstacles to look for survivors and victims. For his efforts he was awarded the Dickin Medal, the highest honor for the work of animals in war.

Worthy – There were many heroes on not all of them people. Porkchop the Search Dog worked without rest for 4 straight days at Ground Zero, eyes burning from smoke, paws bloody, nose full of the smell of death.

On Sept. 11, 2001, my guide dog (for the blind), Roselle, and I were working in the World Trade Center on the 78th floor of Tower One when the airplane crashed into our building. From the outset, Roselle guided and did her job perfectly, as we went to the stairwell and traveled down 1,463 stairs. After leaving the building, we were across the street from Tower Two when it collapsed. Despite the dust and chaos, she remained calm, she saved my life and truly is the greatest dog hero of all.
