James Clark Ross led an expedition between 1839 and 1843. He took two ships; the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror. The Baker Rifle, with sword bayonet. The rifle is fired from the shoulder, with a barrel that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the barrel walls. These make contact with the bullet, imparting spin around an axis, which lends gyroscopic stability to the projectile and prevents tumbling. This allows the use of aerodynamically-efficient pointed bullets (as opposed to the spherical balls used in muskets) and thus improves range and accuracy. 貝克步槍
