Chilta hazar masha (Coat of a thousand nails), bazu band (arm guards), zirah pajama (mail trousers), dhal (shield). Indian armored clothing made from layers of fabric faced with velvet and studded with numerous small brass nails, which were often gilded. Fabric armor was very popular in India because metal became very hot under the Indian sun. Stibbert Museum, Florence Italy.
Mail and plate armour (zereh bagtar), Mughal from Datia, ca. 1600 (Royal Armories). Mail armour was probably introduced into India by the Arabs in the late 8th century and there was a Persian feel to much of it. The form of mail made with alternate rows of riveted and solid links became characteristic of Indian mail, and survived until the 18th C.. The Mughal coats are distinguished from those of the Near East by the large plates at the front.
