Linda Hooper explains making the base for the gazing ball: This is a styrofoam rose cone (for protection from frost). I wrapped chicken wire around it – I used chicken wire so I could make the shape more rounded, and thus easier to mosaic. I put some fiberglass mesh at the bottom. And then, of course, covered it in concrete. Makes a great little stand.
