Victorian death photo: this one is highly unusual because of how long the subjects have been dead before photographing. I don't think I would want this to be the last image I had of a loved one.

A true heartbreaker of an inscription. This photo, with Minnie dressed in her finest and wearing those delightful shoes, must have been taken shortly before she caught the disease that killed her. One must wonder if this is one of those images where parents, knowing that a child had been exposed to something potentially fatal, rushed him or her off to the photography studio to have a memento of a vital and healthy child, instead of a post-mortem photo. A dead woman surrounded by her family. ca.1875. Later in the 19th century and early 20th century photographing the body in the coffin became commonplace. Earlier photos usually portrayed the body as sleeping or, like this photo, alive.
circa 1884.This image is a part of a series of three cards. Two show the child in her casket. This poignant third view depicts her bereaved father clutching his daughter for her last family photograph. He was photographed alone with his daughter possibly because the picture was taken as a personal statement of love and loss. However, it is also possible that his wife is deceased, or was unable to bear the prospect of being photographed with dead daughter.
