A Few Special Cases There are a few other words we can learn here that are special cases:  beside/next to (旁边 – páng biān)  opposite (对面 – duì miàn)  in the middle (中间 – zhōng jiān)  For the first example, it’s not alright to use 面, while for the second it’s not alright to use 边. To say that something is “in the middle,” you don’t use either, but rather use 间 instead. I’m sure that seems confusing, but it’s not too hard to remember.

In English and many other languages, people will discuss about locations using prepositions. In Chinese language, 方位词 (fāng wèi cí or nouns of locality) are used for this purpose.
