A detail from the Moylough Belt Shrine which was found in 1945 by a man cutting turf in a bog in Moylough, Co. Sligo. The shrine is made of bronze. It comprises four parts hinged together with a false buckle at the front. The four sections of this belt enclose the fragments of a leather belt. It is the only surviving belt shrine in Ireland. The shrine has been dated to the 8th century AD. It is not known which saint or holy person the belt shrine is connected with.
