Oh, John COUGAR Mellencamp, there are few musicians who can take such a dire, dour song and still make it such a toe-tappin’ rock and roll song. After all, if I’m listening to this right, the whole song’s about people’s dreams and expectations going up in flames and how we’re all just a bunch of spoiled, selfish chumps who ruin everything because we can’t control our baser selves. At least that’s what I get out of it now, John COUGAR Mellencamp.

Oh, White Lion, way to bring everybody down, guys. Seriously, though, when this song would come on the radio, it was akin to those commercials that come on with what’s-his-face from “Trapper John” talking about starving children or those ridiculously painful HSUS commercials with shivering dogs and terrified cats and the music of Sara MacLachlan. I recorded this one a bunch of times off the radio, plus I had it on tape from the greatest hits cassette I had of yours, so there’s no way to know how many times I’ve listened to this song in my life. As I’ve said before, this song was kind’a my anthem, whatever we want to make of that.
