Frigidarium of the Forum Baths: Pompeii

The frigidarium of the forum baths. The Forum Baths were one of a few bathing complexes in the town, which included the Central Baths, the Stabian Baths and this one near the forum; these were the smallest but probably the most sumptuously decorated. They were built not long after Sulla's colony was established in 80 BC (the town of Pompeii is itself much older), and were largely funded by private individuals according to surviving inscriptions. Due to previous earthquake damage, the Forum…

Pompeii - Temple of Apollo 1

The statue of Apollo in the Temple bearing his name in Pompeii. The Temple of Apollo is the oldest of the religious buildings in Pompeii, dating back to the sixth century BC. The layout at the time of the eruption dates from the third century BC and combines Greek and Italian elements. There are copies of statues of Apollo and Diana within the temple – the originals are in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. Pompeii is one of, if not the, most famous archaeological site in the world…

Thermopolium in Pompeii

A thermopolium is a kind of Roman bar which served hot and cold drinks. The tiled bar-top is fitted with recessed terracotta jars that would have contained the drinks. On the back wall is a fresco painting: specifically it is a lararium (a shrine to Roman household gods), featuring Bacchus on the far right and Mercury on the far left. This particular example is called the thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus and is located on the Via dell'Abbondanza in the ancient ruined Roman town of Pompeii.

More shots from Pompeii. It truly is a special place. Lots of people there, but it is quite big and if you go exploring you can find yourself in many areas with no other people. Very interesting to just walk around and imagine it as a City bustling with people.

House of Octavius Quartio, Pompeii

The House of Loreius Tiburtinus (Also called the House of Octavius Quartio) is renowned for its meticulous and well preserved artwork as well as its large gardens. It is located in the famed Roman city of Pompeii. It, along with the rest of Pompeii was preserved by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24, 79 AD. The House of Loreius Tiburtinus was excavated between the years 1916 and 1921 by V. Spinazzola. It can be found on the Via Dell'Abbondanza (or street of abundance), one…

Many of the homes in Pompeii were behind 'store fronts' such as these. You can see the oven behind the 'bowl' - servants would cook the food then serve it out of these built in bowls to passing patrons. Love that countertop! Thermopolium, Pompeii

In ancient Rome, a thermopolium was a commercial establishment where it was possible to purchase ready-to-eat food, the forerunner of today's restaurant. The items served at the thermopolia are sometimes compared to modern fast-food. These places were mainly used by the poor or those who simply could not afford a private kitchen, sometimes leading them to be scorned by the upper class. A typical thermopolium would consist of a small room with a distinctive masonry counter in the front…
