The 1943 Diary of Claudie Beaucarnot, Fr. colonial Indochina. The Beaucarnots were both typical & atypical of the French elite of Indochina. Claudie's french father was part of the high society of Hanoi. The family was part of an emerging community of Vietnamese and mixed families. After 1945, when Japan took control of Indochina, nationalistic sentiment towards racial purity increased. The métisse were hunted, and 100,000 racially mixed people fled the country, including the Beaucarnots.
