Tortoises live only on land and therefore, they do not know how to swim. Terrapins live both in water and on land, and Sea turtles live only in water. The best way to see the difference among them and the reason why they can/can't swim, is by looking at their feet.

Radiated Tortoise (Geochelone radiate or Astrochelys radiate), top; and Spider Tortoise (Pyxis arachnids), bottom - photo from peace-on-earth, via Flickr; Both species are endemic to Madagascar, and are classified as Critically Endangered. (The “star” pattern on the Radiated Tortoise is more finely detailed and intricate than the normal pattern of other star-patterned tortoise species.)
