Miklós Radnóti (1909-1944) was a Hungarian poet. He was drafted by the Hungarian Army, but as a Jew he was assigned to a labor battalion. In November 1944, he was severely beaten by a militiaman for "scribbling". Too weak to continue, he was shot near the village of Abda in Hungary. Eighteen months later, his mass grave was exhumed and his small notebook of final poems was found in his coat.
