Staff Sergeant Aubrey L. McDade, Jr.: African American War Heroes
Staff Sergeant Aubrey L. McDade, Jr. is a United States Marine who was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic actions in which he rescued two fellow Marines during an enemy ambush in Iraq in 2004. McDade, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, received the Department of the Navy’s second highest award for valor while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division.
Christopher George Gravesite
Christopher George enlisted in the USMC 10/13/48, age 17. He did boot camp at Parris Island graduating PFC. He was stationed at Quantico with the Aircraft Engineering Squadron 12, rising to the rank of Sergeant. During the Korean War he skippered a USMC boat and was gunner on a rescue aircraft. He left active duty 8/29/52 and the MC Reserves 9/3/56. He received the USMC Good Conduct and the National Defense Service Medals. On 5/5/09 the USMC flew a flag over Iwo Jima in honor of his service.
James Allen Whitmore, Jr. (October 1, 1921 – February 6, 2009) was an American film and stage actor. WWII interrupted his pre-law studies at Yale. He received his degree while at boot camp, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and served in the United States Marine Corps in the Panama Canal Zone during World War II.

Col. Ed McMahon, USMC (Ret.), like many Hollywood celebrities of his era, was a military veteran. He volunteered for service during World War II. He went through flight training at various bases, but the end of the war came before he was deployed overseas. In the 1950s, McMahon was recalled by the Marines to serve in Korea. There, he was an F-9 Panther pilot and flew 85 combat missions as an artillery spotter, according to an Army website. 1923 - 2009
Terrence Stephen "Steve" McQueen (Mar 24, 1930 – Nov 7, 1980) - American actor. In 1947, he joined US Marine Corps, promoted to PFC, assigned to an armored unit. Initially, demoted to private 7 times, went AWOL by failing to return after a weekend pass had expired spent 41 days in the brig. After this, he resolved to embrace the Marines' discipline. He saved the lives 5 other Marines on Arctic exercise, before tank fell through ice into sea. He served until 1950 was honorably discharged.
