Design for a chimney-piece, c. 1540 | Throughout his career Holbein produced designs for furniture, plate, jewellery, clocks, & other luxury goods but this design is the only evidence that he made architectural designs in England, & the coat of arms indicates that it was for Henry VIII. His design incorporates battle scenes & roundels of blind Justice on the right & Charity on the left & Esther before Ahasuerus below. It is suggested that the piece was for the fireplace in Whitehall Palace.
