“If the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall & Britain with it.” According to legend, when Charles II (1660-1685) established the Royal Observatory at the Tower of London the Royal Astronomer John Flamsteed, complained the birds interfered with his celestial observations. Charles ordered their demise – only to be given the infamous warning by an obscure soothsayer.  Consequently, Charles II decreed that at least six ravens be kept at the Tower at all times.
