Luncheon of the Boating Party shows a group of Renoir´s friends relaxing and enjoying food, drinks and good conversation on a balcony at the Maison Fournaise in Chatou, France. Renoir often included close friends is his paintings and in this canvas he also includes his future wife, Aline Charigot, who can be seen in the left foreground playing with a small dog.

We all know and love Pierre-Auguste Renoir as a preeminent painter of people, but often overlook his landscapes. This is a mistake for, as Renoir Landscapes: 1865-1883 illustrates, the artist originally developed his superbly innovative color palette and loose brushwork in the freedom of the outdoors.

In Woman with a Parasol in a Garden Renoir’s language is wholly impressionistic: in a setting lacking a visible horizon, the flowers and shrubs are created with tiny dabs of colour, providing a constant interweaving of textures around the two small figures. The woman, whose parasol shades her from the sun, stands close to the man as he leans down, perhaps to pick a flower, hinting at an intimate relationship.
