Most are hardy to zone 3 and bloom reliably, even here in the North - if you prune at the right time.   Some of you may say: “What? I prune in fall so that the snow load doesn’t break them.” And certainly, you could prune them in fall and still have gorgeous flowers in summer the following year – but I like the look of snow on my dry hydrangea flowers as it adds a lot of winter interest. Keeping the flower heads on also gives the plant better protection in winter and because the dry flower heads catch the snow it ensures the hydrangeas receive more moisture – which is perfect for a plant with the name “hydra” in its name.
