Rumford's method is to get the basic shape right, with a plumb bob and a special device he suggests for marking out the 135 degree angle for the covings. His masons used plaster to round off the breast. FYI: Superior Clay Corp. has been very successful in manufacturing vitrified clay Rumford throats and smoke chambers... consider using the segmented throat tiles.
