Algebra is one of the most complex subjects of study. It is also the basis for many more difficult levels of study, like engineering, physics, business and even culinary arts. As a math tutor of mainly Algebra students, I have learned that most students have not mastered specific basics of Pre-Algebra and therefore are left stuck on more complex Algebra problems. If you are trying to pass Algebra, here are a few Pre-Algebra concepts you need to master.

The Secondary Classroom can be fun too.....: Basic Factoring Notes includes synthetic division

Ah yes, factoring. How my kids (for some reason) dislike thee. Whatever, we'll get over it ;) This term, for some reason, my classes have, as a whole, required different methods of teaching. They've needed more guided notes and I think it's due to many of my kids not having an Algebra 1 credit. Gosh, how important it is to have this credit! Anyways, here are my guided notes for four types of factoring :) I started off the lesson with GCF but this didn't have it's own guided notes sheet…

This free Quadratic Formula template works great as a warm up, exit ticket or as a quick check for understanding. Students get a template and an equation and are asked to identify A, B and C and then solve the equation. I print a stack and have them on hand for students as they enter the room. I have a quadratic projected on the smartboard for students to solve. #quadraticformula

Airplane Method for Factoring. I don't think I was taught this method, at least I don`t remember it...we just had the iterative guess method. Must review!

I mentioned the "airplane" method for factoring in a recent post. Someone asked me what that was, so I thought I'd share. I have seen a lot of methods for factoring a quadratic with a leading coefficient. Out of the ones I've tried, this is my favorite. The analogy to an airplane is a bit of a stretch, but students seem to remember it pretty well. So I'll take it. I should also mention that, before I show this to students, I always spend some time letting them work on these by trial and…
