Communal Latrine
Communal Latrine With up to 800 men living in the fort, good hygiene was essential to keep the healthy. Located in the southeast corner of the fort, this latrine ("latrina") reveals the clean, communal attitude to hygiene in the Roman world. The latrine has a deep sewer, originally covered with a wooden floor and benches with holes to form multiple toilet seats. The sewer was flushed by rainwater brought from all over the fort in drains, and out via a culvert under the fort wall.
House Of Decimus. A Roman Home
A reconstruction of a Roman domus, or a house. Much like in large cities of today, only the wealthy could afford a true house in the city. Houses often had storefronts that they rented out to tenants which speaks to the expense of maintaining a household (and slaves).

Roman bread from Pompeii, Italy. Pompeii was buried under a thick layer of volcanic ash by a catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The site of the town was rediscovered in 1748, and subsequent excavations revealed buildings and artefacts in a remarkably well preserved state.
