15 August 1944, Operation Dragoon began, which was the Allied invasion of Southern France. Western Naval Task Force, landed the Allied force, commanded Major General Alexander M. Patch, USA, on the front between Toulon and Cannes. The successful capture of the southern French ports, together with the subsequent drive north up the Rhone River valley to Lyon and Dijon provided critical support to the Normandy-based armies finally moving east toward the German border.
