Amphorae were pottery vessels, large clay jars, that were usually made wide at the girth, provided with a neck and opening at the mouth that was narrow enough to be sealed with cork, provided with vertical handles on the opposing sides. There was a great variety attached to the production; height, girth, thickness of clay construction. They were usually 3 ft. and a bit higher. They held liquids - wine, oil, fish sauce - and were also used for other foods, like olives, dates, figs, nuts…
