A. Truss bridge: pair of girders supporting a deck spanning the gap between two piers; withstands compression in upper parts and tension in lower. B. Arch bridge: can be designed so that no part is in tension. Reinforced concrete is more elegant and less costly arch. C. Suspension bridge: deck suspended from cables slung between high towers that are in compression. D. Cantilever bridge: carried by two beams, supported at one end; must resist tension in upper half and compression in lower.
