December 23, 1230: Death of Berengaria of Navarre. Berengaria was the wife of Richard the Lionheart. chosen for him by his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. The couple had no children, and it's generally thought that their marriage probably was never consummated. Berengaria was the only English queen never to set foot in England. (Then again, Richard only spent 6 months there during his reign.) -- photograph by Mossot, published under the GNU Free Documentation License.
