GYULA ILLYES In his poetry Illyés was a spokesman for the oppressed peasant class. Typical is "PEOPLE OF THE PUSZTA", published 1936 which is an account of landless serfs on big agricultural estates of 19th & early 20th c. Hungary. The author, himself was born & brought up on a puszta & he describes the powerlessness of serfs on one hand, & their resilience with which they struggled for a living & for dignity.
