Yurupari Mask.Ticuna people, Western Amazon, Brazil. Reeds, wood, & bark cloth. For over 400 years, the Ticuna (Tukuna) tribes have survived in the Brazilian Amazon forest near the borders of Peru and Columbia. During the last 50 years they have been under constant threat of violent extermination and forced integration. One of the last large populated groups left in Brazil, the Ticuna are known for their sensitive artistry in basketry, wood and stone sculpture, and mask making.
