A good practical personal side arm from Vietnam. This sword or small dao truòng measures 68.5cms long with a blade length of 44.5cm. The long hilt is bound in simple natural twine or cord with the ring pommel having lost its covering. A simple octagonal or bagua shaped guard separates the blade and hilt.
Rare example of a large Ram Dao. The overall length of this 74cms with a blade length of 55cms long and 7cms wide at the handle, widening to 18cms near the tip. The thick faceted spine is a little over 2cms thick where the handle joins. Of a most unusual shape, this particular weapon is used to decapitate sacrificial Buffalo in ritual offerings to the goddess Kali in commenoration of the slaying of the Buffalo demon Mahisha by Kali's progenitor, Durga.
