Baby’s dress, 1750-1770 Europe (continental), Colonial Williamsburg Many of you already know that kids before somewhere around the 1790’s were dressed to look like tiny adults. In some ways, this practice even made its way into baby clothes. The bodice on this dress here is actually lightly boned.

Piano at Colonial Williamsburg, one of the oldest examples, inscribed Johannes Zumpe Londini fecit 1766. Its keyboard begins on GG, with 58 notes. It has one hanstop inside at the left, lifting all dampers to create a dulcimer-like tone. Shown below is a later example with the full five octaves beginning on FF, this one by Beck, inscribed, Fredericus Beck Londini fecit 1775.
