JU-87 Stuka

The siege of Leningrad started on the September 1941 and by the the German Army was just away. While at this point, panzer divisions where sent elsewhere, the Luftwaffe took over by bombing the city. The siege of Leningrad lasted 872 days.

With its two wing-mounted MG-17 machine guns and single rear-facing 7.92 mm weapon the Stuka was woefully inadequate in the face of the heavily armed and maneuverable RAF fighters. In one day alone (Aug. 18), British planes shot down 18 Stukas. In fact, a total of 59 of the dive-bombers were destroyed in aerial combat during the summer of 1940. As expected, the Luftwaffe soon pulled its Ju 87s frontline service.
