2 facing pages from a booked called Ilocano Dotrina Cristiana written in 1621. Spanish missionaries often translated religious manuscripts into the local language to facilitate conversion. It was easier for one Spanish missionary to learn several languages than for hundreds of Filipinos to learn Spanish. I have read there were 14 writing systems in the Philippines when the Spanish arrived, and most people could read and write. Within a century, most Filipinos were illiterate.

Ilokano language: The Austronesian ancestors of the present-day Ilocanos came to the Philippines through bilogs, or outrigger boats during the Iron Age. The Ilocano or Ilokano people are the third largest Filipino ethnolinguistic group. Aside from being referred to as Ilocanos (from "i" – 'from', and "looc" – 'bay'), they also refer to themselves as Samtoy, from the Ilocano phrase "sao mi ditoy", meaning 'our language origin'. The word "Ilocano" came from the word "Iloco" or "Yloco."
