This portrait is a fine example of the profile likeness taken when Edward was about nine years old, on the eve of his succession as King. The original example, which has yet to be conclusively identified, but which may be in the Met Museum, New York, was almost certainly done by William Scrots, a talented Flemish artist first employed by Henry VIII as the King’s Painter from 1546. Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford. Later Duke of Somerset. Husband to Anne Stanhope. Son of Edward Seymour, brother to Henry VIII's wife Jane Seymour, uncle to Edward VI. Lord Protector during Edward VI's minority until he was beheaded for treason.

Edward VI-at the age of fifteen, on July 6th, 1553, after reigning for six and a half years, dies at Greenwich Palace,  in the arms of Sir Henry Sidney, one of the Chief Gentleman of his Privy Chamber.

Henry's long-awaited son, a somewhat priggish young man who was, after all, a pawn in a game played between his uncles and supporters. The boy didn't even have a bit of spending money. A portrait of King Edward VI, commissioned by Ralph Sheldon.
