artofthedarkages: Buckles, hinges, and fittings with openwork and incised designs of swirls, plants, and horsemen. Forged out of leaded tin and bronze. Made in the 8th-9th century for an Avar nobleman in Austria. Currently located at the British Museum.

Ottoman karabala style scimitar, early 17th c, steel, brass, silver, gold, jade, turquoise, L., 42 1/16 in. (106.83 cm); sword L., 40 1/8 in. (101.9 cm); blade L., 35 in. (88.9 cm); Wt., 4 lb. 4 oz. (1928 g), Met Museum. This is a typical Ottoman presentation saber of the 17th c. Many similar weapons, as well as shields and complete horse trappings similiarly mounted in silver-gilt and set with jade plaques and turquoise, were captured after the unsuccessful Turkish seige of Vienna in 1683.
