The place where this fairy tale occurred was in the fictional European country of Florin. The story was set in a time "before Europe and after blue-jeans" (Goldman 52) and contained the Cliffs of Insanity and the Fire Swamps, two treacherous landmarks which led to death if one was not careful. Florin was a civilization full of romance, bravery, and wisdom to all who sought it.
