The Rainiest Place On Earth | The Weather Channel
One of Earth's wettest locations saw a staggering two-day rainfall total of nearly 100 inches on June 15-16, 1995. Cherrapunji, India, recorded 98.15 inches of rain, or over 8 feet – a world record for a 48-hour time period, according to the World Meteorological Organization. Cherrapunji's rainy reputation is well earned due to the geography of where it's located in the northeast state of Meghalaya. It has an annual average rainfall of nearly 440 inches, according to the India Meteorological Department. A huge majority of the rain falls in the summer, with both June & July picking up an average of more than 100 inches each. That's in dramatic contrast to the winter dry season when December & January combine to average just an inch of rain. #meteorology
Explaining The Chance Of Rain | University of Georgia
The probability of precipitation (PoP) is for a specified time period (i.e., today, this afternoon, tonight, Thursday) for any given point in the forecast area. The PoP is a statistical probability of measurable (0.01 inch or more) precipitation at a given area in the given forecast area in the time period specified. For example, a 40% probability of rain does *not* mean (1) that 40% of the area will be covered by precipitation at given time in the given forecast area, or (2) that you will be seeing precipitation 40% of the time in the given forecast area for the given forecast time period. PoP forecasts don’t tell you how long or how much it will rain. #meteorology
