The first Olympics ( which may have begun as far back as the 9th century B.C.) 3,000 years ago evolved out of a religious festival honoring Zeus. The idea behind the Olympics was twofold: to exhibit the talents and development of young citizens and to bring Greeks together in a friendly, diplomatic setting ( sort of like an ancient United Nations Summit ).

How the First Olympics Worked

According to historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. They were dedicated to the Olympian gods and were staged on the ancient plains of Olympia.
