‘Carmagnole’ jacket The jacket known as the Carmagnole is said to have been worn during the French Revolution by the Sans-culottes, workers, tradesmen and a few members of the Convention.

1793 The portrait is of the wife of the scientist, philosopher, and political reformer Dr Joseph Priestley (1733-1804). The artist painted in England from 1787-1796 and was in Birmingham in 1792. The date of the portrait is based on a letter from the artist to the Birmingham industrialist Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) of 27/3/1793.
